In our world-class program, you will gain the expertise to design and manage the world's most sophisticated mining operations. You’ll dive deep into specialized fields like explosives and rock mechanics while gaining a competitive advantage in mine economics and environmental sustainability. Our program is home to the Alberta Chamber of Resources Chair in Mining Engineering, the Canada Research Chair in Natural Resources Uncertainty Management and the Centre for Computational Geostatistics.

The Surface Mining Laboratory

The Surface Mining Laboratory is a heavy mining equipment research facility that specializes in machine design and operational solutions for the oil sands. Key assets include an MTS 1000 cyclic testing frame, a 120-channel HBM digital data acquisition system and Somat/NI field DAQ systems. The lab features operational jaw/roll crushers, a dragline, and capabilities for large tire and rim testing and truck rolling resistance studies.

Program Objectives

  • This master of engineering program is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge, skills,and practical expertise in mining engineering. 
  • It aims to develop professionals who tackle the industry's complex challenges and emerging trends, particularly in geostatistics, mine design, mine planning and production scheduling. 
  • The program also provides students with the necessary knowledge, skills, tools, and experience to contribute to the mining engineering industry and society.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop advanced knowledge and skills in mining engineering principles, practices, and technologies to effectively plan, design, and manage mining operations in a safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable manner.
  2. Implement necessary tools and techniques to analyze complex mining problems using computer-based models, simulations and data analysis methods.
  3. Collaborate effectively with team members on capstone projects and communicate effectively with team members and other target audiences.
  4. Develop the foundational knowledge and awareness for life-long learning to continue professional growth, thus being adaptable to the ever-evolving industry needs 
  5. Understand ethical and professional responsibilities and make informed judgments. considering the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental and societal contexts.
