Hiring for First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Positions
The U of A is committed to protecting resources and spaces intended for First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) faculty, staff and students, including in hiring. Certain positions at the University of Alberta are specifically intended for FNMI peoples and/or have a bona fide occupational requirement (BFOR) for FNMI membership or citizenship (“FNMI positions”).
The university has instituted a document verification process during the hiring process for such roles to support confirmation of FNMI membership or citizenship.
The FNMI document verification process helps determine eligible candidates for FNMI positions. Those hiring will follow the steps for recruitment and can expect to go through job evaluation (if needed), position approval and posting, candidate application, evaluation and selection, hiring and onboarding.
The FNMI document verification process applies to the hiring process for FNMI positions, but not to employees occupying existing roles.
It is essential that the document verification process be conducted in a sensitive, respectful manner, and in some cases additional time may be needed to ensure a consistent and fair candidate experience. The documentation process is integrated with related data management processes, such as employee and position records.
