NMHI Membership

Membership in the NMHI is open to all those who want to further neuroscience and mental health research, including academics, clinicians, trainees, healthcare workers, and other stakeholders.

University of Alberta members come from departments and faculties across campus including Medicine and Dentistry, Science, Rehabilitation Medicine, Kinesiology Sport and Recreation, Nursing, Engineering, Business, and Arts. They are advancing research to improve the lives of individuals with neurological and mental health diseases and disorders.

Benefits to joining the NMHI

NMHI members receive a range of benefits designed to support their research, training, and professional development, including:

  • Exclusive funding – As an NMHI member, you are eligible to apply for exclusive funding opportunities. 
  • Networking opportunities – Connect with a diverse community of researchers, clinicians, and trainees. NMHI actively fosters multidisciplinary collaborations at the institutional, national, and international levels.
  • Training – Students have the opportunity to draw on the expertise of researchers and clinicians from a variety of faculties and department.
  • Professional development – NMHI offers a variety of professional development opportunities, including NMHI Research Day, the NMHI Seminar Series, and other events designed to support career growth.
  • Promotion of research – NMHI members are encouraged to contact nmhicoms@ualberta.ca to suggest news story ideas and to request to have their research and accomplishments highlighted (e.g., news articles, social media).
  • Community and visibility – Membership helps raise the profile of neuroscience and mental health research across the university and beyond, strengthening advocacy, knowledge mobilization, and public engagement.

Member expectations

NMHI members are expected to actively support and promote the Institute’s mission by:

  • Acknowledging NMHI affiliation
    List your NMHI affiliation in manuscripts submitted for publication, as well as on curricula vitae and biosketches.

  • Using NMHI brand assets
    In addition to the NMHI logo, members are encouraged to use available NMHI brand assets and templates (e.g., presentation slides, posters, promotional materials) where appropriate. Larger-scale branded items (e.g., NMHI banner) may be requested for local conferences, lectures, and other events, subject to availability and advance notice.

  • Recognizing NMHI funding support
    Acknowledge NMHI financial support in presentations, publications, and other dissemination activities resulting from NMHI-funded research.

  • Engaging in NMHI activities
    Participate in NMHI-hosted events, such as seminars, research days, networking sessions, and training opportunities.

  • Contributing to peer review and governance
    Serve on NMHI grant and award review panels, advisory groups, and other committees when invited, as capacity allows.
