Open Science Initiative

What is Open Science?

Open science is a framework in research that can accelerate the generation of knowledge and its application to the development of novel treatments for neurological and psychiatric conditions by removing barriers to sharing and use of that knowledge. Open science calls for a free flow of information, materials, and data, and this knowledge dissemination in turn can speed innovation for the benefit of those affected by these debilitating conditions. Beyond the opportunity to speed discovery, open access publication is already mandated by some funding agencies.

Why Open Science?

The way research is traditionally shared can slow progress. Restricted access, siloed data, and publication bias limit how quickly discoveries translate into real-world impact.

Open science changes that.

By making research outputs accessible, reusable, and collaborative, we can accelerate discovery and improve outcomes for patients.

NMHI's Commitment

At the NMHI, we are committed to adopting these three science pillars over time:

Open Access

Open access publication will allow members and collaborators to publish research results, including negative results, without restriction.

Open Data

Open research data will allow our scientists to share experimental data freely and meaningfully with institutions around the world, to increase the power of our data sets and to avoid redundancy in our research. We will work towards the FAIR Data Principles.

Open Tools

Open source research software will allow our members to share software for analysis, simulation, modelling, visualization, or other scripts such that the full source code is available.
