The Dr. Daniah Basodan Patient and Family Advocate Award
The Dr. Daniah Basodan Patient and Family Advocate Award was established in honour of our late colleague and friend, Dr. Basodan, a pediatric rheumatologist in the Department of Pediatrics (DoP) at the University of Alberta who sadly passed away in November 2024. Dr. Basodan was a tireless and enthusiastic advocate for her patients and families. This award will be given to a person or group of people in the DoP who most exemplify these qualities:
- Exemplifying the principles of patient- and family-centered care through daily clinical and professional interactions.
- Patient and family advocacy on a local level, as demonstrated by a persistent dedication to the excellent care of, and concern for, one’s patients. This could include (but is not limited to) advocating for the approval of difficult to access investigations and/or treatments, establishment of institutional protocols that improve quality or access to care for patients, or other such advocacy efforts.
- Patient and family advocacy on a provincial, national, or international level. This could include advocating for funding for a patient group, being involved with a patient and family support organization, lobbying the government, or other such advocacy efforts.
