The Dr. Gary Lopaschuk Mentorship Award
The Dr. Gary Lopaschuk Mentorship Award was established in honour of our late colleague, Dr. Lopaschuk, a respected and accomplished cardiovascular researcher in the Department of Pediatrics (DoP) at the University of Alberta who sadly passed away in April 2025. Dr. Lopaschuk made seminal contributions through his research that fundamentally reshaped our understanding of how the heart generates and uses energy. He was an exceptional mentor who trained and inspired generations of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. Dr. Lopaschuk was generous with his time in supporting his mentees, insightful in his feedback, and genuinely helped his trainees to succeed. This award will be given to a person in the DoP who most exemplifies these qualities.
The purpose of this award is to recognize faculty/staff who provide exemplary guidance, support, and advocacy for the professional and personal development of mentees (including students, trainees, and junior colleagues). This can include mentorship in research or other scholarly areas.
Nomination Process
The primary nominator must be a trainee or a faculty member within the Department of Pediatrics. Nominations must include a narratives (a brief description, maximum 1,000 words) of how this individual’s mentoring has affected their career and/or the career of others. The primary nominator must include a letter describing how the nominee embodies the criteria of this award. The primary nominator may solicit 1-2 supporting letters for their nominee. Each additional nominator must provide an individual letter (max 1–2-page letter).
Eligible Candidates Include (but are not limited to):
- Faculty member from the Department of Pediatric who mentor students, trainees, and junior colleagues
- Provided encouragement and support for the career and/or personal development of mentees
- Sustained mentorship and support both formally and informally over time to multiple individuals in the domains of personal and professional growth
- Demonstrated qualities one might look for in a mentor including (but not limited to) a long-term commitment to mentoring, being a successful role model, being an advisor, guide, coach, and/or interpreter of organizational and/or professional rules
- Provided successful career development, including any, or all of the following: teaching, research, clinical and administration
Nominations for the 2025/2026 year have now closed.
Nominations will be reviewed by the Awards Committee which will consist of various members from the Department of Pediatrics and the wider community as needed.
