Message From the Director

It is my honour to extend warm greetings on behalf of the University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS).

The University of Alberta is proud to be ranked among the top 100 universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings, offering a diverse range of faculties and research programs. With over 400 buildings across five campuses covering more than 17 square kilometers, the U of A also owns a variety of other properties, including research facilities, botanical gardens and farm operations. As part of our peace officer authorization, UAPS holds public safety jurisdiction over all these properties within Alberta.

North Campus alone serves a community of approximately 71,625 individuals daily, including students, staff, visitors and commuters. In 2024, the personal crime rate on campus was recorded at just 0.98 incidents per 1,000 individuals, reflecting our ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all.

For more than 100 years, UAPS has been a vital law enforcement entity in Edmonton, maintaining a strong and collaborative relationship with the Edmonton Police Service throughout this time. Operating under the authority of the University of Alberta as Peace Officers, we are guided by the Peace Officer Act of Alberta. Our partnership with the Edmonton Police Service is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), ensuring effective coordination and support for our jurisdiction.

We take great pride in being the leaders in public safety on our campuses. Our team, which includes Peace Officers, Security Agents, Social Safety Navigators, Support Staff, Investigators and Dispatchers, plays a critical role in protecting the well-being of everyone at the university.
