If it is an emergency, call 911 then Protective Services.
Properly secure your bike with a good lock

Methods
- Lock the bike frame and wheels together
- Secure the quick release front wheel alongside the frame and rear wheel
Do
- Use a u-shaped bike lock
- Secure your bike and wheels to the bike rack
- Ensure gaps between your bike and lock are small
- Take removable items and accessories with you
Don’t
- Use only a cable lock, which can be cut and removed more easily
- Put your bike lock near the ground, which gives room to smash the lock open
Lock your bike in a good location
Lock your bike in designated areas. Avoid isolated, unlit locations that could increase the risk of theft.
The university offers a number of secure places to lock your bike, including paid bicycle lockers and cages. Visit the parking services website to learn about locations and rates.
If you live in our residences, park your bike in a free residence bike room. Email housing@ualberta.ca for more information.
Keep a record of your bike
Keeping a record of your bike’s details can help Protective Services or Edmonton Police Service track down your property. Details include:
- Model
- Make
- Colour
- Serial number
- Photo
- Other unique characteristics
Bike index is a non-profit bike registry that helps police locate your bike if it is stolen. Add your bike to the bike index
