Safety tips for studying late or working outside regular hours

There are actions you can take to keep yourself safe when studying late or working outside regular hours on University of Alberta campuses.

Choose a good study location

Choose a study location that is open for extended hours, and where you know others will be. Late or early access may require a ONEcard, so keep your card with you at all times.

Know building hours and ensure you have access

View the Facilities and Building Hours web page for a listing of current hours for University of Alberta buildings, parking lots, parkades and pedways across our campuses and properties.

Note that there are interior access routes which allow you to access study spaces and travel between buildings after hours on North Campus.

Study or work with others

Study with someone you know or work with a colleague, when possible. Look out for one another. If you’re the second to last person to leave, let the other person know and offer to leave with them.

Carry a cell phone and consider using a check in app to let someone know where you are, and when you’re leaving. You can also use the Lone Worker Service offered by Protective Services.

Note that the university uses a working alone protocol as an administrative control to ensure safe work practices. Visit the Administrative Controls web page to learn more.

Practice situational awareness

Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, especially if you’re reading, on a computer, using headphones or doing work that limits your vision or hearing.

Trust your instincts, and be confident and direct with people you don’t know.

Know who to call

If an uncomfortable or dangerous situation arises, call Protective Services at 780-492-5050. At Enterprise Square, call 780-428-1541. In an emergency, call 911.

Staying safe while leaving campus

There are personal safety accompaniment services available on all campuses. Visit the Personal Safety Accompaniment web page for details on these services, and how to access them.
