Opportunity

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) supports research collaborations between Canada and select partner organizations and eligible countries and regions.

Under the joint supervision of a home and host professor, successful senior undergraduate students, graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows will receive a $6,000 research award to conduct a 12- to 24-week research project in the other country. 

University of Alberta internal process for 2026/27 Allocation Stream

As noted above this year (2026-27) the UofA has been given 16 internship units. Each internship unit represents a 12-24 week project valued at $6,000. In the past, these internship units have been given out on a “first-come-first-served” basis. However, due to the increased interest in the Mitacs GRA program coupled with only 16 allocation spots, this year we will be holding an internal selection process in order to best support our faculty, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers in leveraging this opportunity towards future success. Note that due to the internal and Mitacs timelines, all proposed Mitacs GRA projects must have a projected start date between January and December 2027.

Internal Selection Process for Allocation Stream

By June 29, 2026 at 08:00 a.m.	Faculty members submit this Google Form for internal review.
Within 3 weeks of the internal deadline	The decision of the internal review is communicated to the faculty members who applied.
Within 6 weeks of notice of success	Successful proposals must develop and submit the full application to Mitacs a maximum of six (6) weeks after the date they were informed that they were selected. This includes getting all participant signatures, getting Mitacs Advisor approval, getting RAS approval and signature, Submitting to Mitacs in the GRA portal If this deadline is missed the allocation will be revoked and given to the next eligible faculty member who applied.

Internal application process and content

NB: There is no institutional limit on Quantum stream projects, which do not count in a university’s allocation. Faculty may apply directly to Mitacs by contacting their local Mitacs advisor.

The internal application is made via this Google Form and must be submitted by the UofA supervisor (faculty member) for the proposed Mitacs GRA project. Both the international supervisor (faculty member) and the intern who will be participating in the project must be named and cannot be “to be determined”. Any faculty member eligible to hold grant funds is invited to apply regardless of their research area. It is strongly encouraged that the UofA supervisor, the international supervisor, and the intern contribute to the content of this internal application, as they will be expected to work together on the full application to Mitacs. Please read the Mitacs GRA Guidelines before applying to ensure that the project and participants are eligible. The Google Form will collect the following information:

• UofA supervisor, Department & Faculty
• Project title
• International supervisor name and affiliation
• International supervisor eligibility questions
• Intern name and affiliation
• Intern type (undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral researcher)
• Direction of intern travel (outbound or inbound)
• Intern eligibility questions
• Proposed project start date
  • Must be Jan - Dec 2027
• Proposed project end date
  • Must be a maximum of 24 weeks after the proposed start date
• Brief description of research proposal
  • Include objectives, hypotheses and/or research questions.
  • Max 1000 characters (including spaces)
• Justification for international mobility
  • Detail how the intern will be involved in the project (development and implementation) and how specifically this international mobility is expected to benefit the intern.
  • Max 1500 characters (including spaces)
• Description of collaboration and future plans
  • Describe the international collaboration, how this Mitacs GRA project will fit into it and provide benefits that would otherwise not be attainable.
  • Describe the future plans for this collaboration, specifically how will it be maintained, expanded, and funded (give specific funding opportunities and projected timelines to application).
  • Max 2000 characters (including spaces)

The internal review of applications will be coordinated by the Office of the Vice-President (Research) to ensure appropriate and equitable allocation of internship units across the whole university and to gauge: 

1. The benefit to the intern participating in the project and the quality of the opportunities and experiences it will give them; and
2. The benefit the GRA project will bring to the collaboration between the home and host supervisor and how it is expected to be leveraged towards future funding.

Priority will be given to outbound (UofA) interns who have never participated in a Mitacs GRA project and UofA faculty members who have not previously held a Mitacs GRA.

Faculty members who apply will be informed of the outcome of the internal review within three (3) weeks of the deadline. Successful proposals will be given six (6) weeks to submit their full proposal to Mitacs. Should there be remaining internship unit allocations after all the internal applications have been processed a second internal application window will be announced in Fall 2026.
