Maternal and Child Health Graduate Program (MatCH)

The Maternal and Child Health Graduate Program (MatCH) offers a portal into multidisciplinary research environments.

This program offers graduate students an inter-disciplinary approach between basic and clinical research.

Students can choose from over 70 highly funded laboratories to do their short-term rotations and their graduate studies.

Students interested in the MatCH program should apply online through the Faculty of Graduate Studies & Research, and include this form in their application in order to be considered for MatCH.

Doctoral Program

The objective of the PhD program is to form the next generation of scientists in clinical and biomedical sciences. PhD students will be involved in cutting-edge scientific research and will develop critical thinking as well as communication and problem-solving skills. Upon completion of the PhD program our students should be able to perform scientific research independently.

The minimum length of the PhD program is three years, to a maximum of six years, depending on the research undertaken.

Note: Master's students who are reclassified into the doctoral program must complete all degree requirements within six years from their first term of registration as a master's student.

The residency requirement for the PhD programs is two academic years (where an academic year is defined as the eighth month period from September through April).

Where a PhD student's research projects are conducted off-campus, or where, for other reasons, the PhD student does not have a full-time presence on campus for these opportunities, the supervisor, Supervisory Committee and the Graduate Studies Committee must resolve how the residency objectives will be met during the PhD student's program. Additionally, the PhD proposal package submitted to the Medical Sciences Graduate Program Committee must explicitly state how these objectives will be met during the PhD student's program.

Note: students who are admitted to any thesis-based degree program and who initially register as full-time graduate students in these programs must register as full-time for the remainder of their program.

Master's Program

The objective of the master's in science (M.Sc.) program is to lead the students in the development of critical scientific thinking and in the acquisition of solid knowledge of the molecular basis of disease and specific area of research. At the end of the program graduates must be able to formulate hypotheses and to propose experimental strategies to test them.

The minimum length of the master's program is 1.5 years to a maximum of four years, depending on the research undertaken.

The master's program has a requirement of one academic year residency. MSc students must be registered full-time for a minimum of one academic year (where an academic year is defined as the eight month period from September through April).

Note: students who are admitted to any thesis-based degree program and who initially register as full-time graduate students in these programs must register full-time for the remainder of their program.
