Event: Asian Studies Brown Bag Series

Wednesday, February 12 12-1pm (TELUS Centre 131) Presented by Chiho Ogawa and Yoshi Ono The Ikema Dialect of Miyako: Some Challenges Working on an Endangered Language in Okinawa, Japan

05 February 2020

PTJC are happy to host Asian Studies Brown Bag Series.

This time, Chiho Ogawa and Yoshi Ono are going to share their research with us.

Miyako is an endangered minority language variety spoken on three remote Japanese islands near Taiwan. This variety is related to Japanese but different enough to have been recognized as a separate language by UNESCO some 10 years ago. We present a report from the documentation and maintenance work we have been doing on one of its dialects, Ikema, spoken on Ikema island. We highlight some of the issues and challenges we have been encountering and trying to deal with.

All are welcome!
Light lunch will be served.
