The selection and reappointment of University of Alberta Deans is governed by UAPPOL policy and procedure (Faculty Deans Selection Procedure and Faculty Deans Review Procedure). Prior to the end of a dean’s appointment, a selection or review committee is established by the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) to select a new dean, or to review the performance of the current dean.
The Provost and Vice-President (Academic) (or designee) is the Chair of Selection and Review committees, and members are elected or appointed from various representative constituencies of the Faculty/unit: Faculty members, non-professoriate staff, students, stakeholders, and representatives from professional and community associations may also be appointed. Once established, committees will seek advice and opinion from the Faculty, and from the wider University community, on the leadership needs of each Faculty. Over the course of a selection or a review, the committee will present frequent opportunities for consultation and advice from various stakeholders as required.
For specific information on dean selection and review committee composition for each University of Alberta Faculty, please see the Faculty Deans Selection Procedure Appendix A: Dean Selection Committees for Individual Faculties.
