Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is dedicated to excelling in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health outcomes for Canadians, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened Canadian health care system.

As part of this commitment, CIHR conducts multiple funding competitions for investigator- and strategic/priority-driven research. These funding opportunities cover a wide range of health-related topics and have deadlines throughout the year.

CIHR funds research under four themes (Pillars):

Researchers can explore all current CIHR funding opportunities in ResearchNet .

The Research Partner Network also maintains a quick reference database of CIHR funding opportunities, including a brief overview and objectives, funding amounts, and deadlines (access for UofA CCID-holders only).

Please visit the CIHR Project Grant competition page for more information including deadlines and supports.

More information

The University of Alberta's Research Partner Network (RPNet) offers a range of grant development supports for researchers applying for CIHR grants. To learn more about these supports, please contact the RPNet CIHR lead, Gareth Corry, or reach out to your College or Faculty’s Office of Research.

If you plan to submit an application to a CIHR funding opportunity, please advise Gareth Corry so that the appropriate supports can be identified and put in place early in the grant development process.

The CIHR University Delegates (UD) network keeps the health research community, universities, and affiliated institutions informed of the CIHR's direction, initiatives, and decisions. Delegates meet monthly to discuss topics and important issues facing the research community and to raise awareness on important topics faced by researchers. The current UofA UD is Dr. Christian Beaulieu (Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging); please contact Dr. Beaulieu (christian.beaulieu@ualberta.ca) if there is a topic or issue you would like to see addressed at a future UD meeting.
