Global Surgery and Acute Care Surgery (GSACS) Fellowship
Fellowship Description
The Global Surgery & Acute Care Surgery (GSACS) Fellowship is a 12-month clinical fellowship program created through a collaboration between the Office of Global Surgery and the Acute Care Emergency Surgery Fellowship at the University of Alberta.
The fellowship delivers a customizable and flexible curriculum aimed to develop clinical and non-clinical skills and competencies for future leaders in global surgery. The program seeks to build a greater understanding of the ethical and systems-level considerations and challenges in global surgery and provides opportunities for the fellow to engage in education, research, and health systems development in resource-limited settings.
In consultation with the program directors, the fellow will design and implement a tailored fellowship curriculum that best aligns with the interests and learning objectives identified by the fellow.
In general, the fellow can expect to undertake a portion of clinical training in Edmonton, Canada, and elect to undertake either international rotations or in remote or rural Canadian settings at any one or more of the OGS's institutional partners locally and around the world. Pending availability of spots, the fellow may also undertake up to six-months of Acute Care Surgery in Edmonton and receive certifications in both Acute Care Surgery and Global Surgery.
Eligibility
- This Fellowship is for individuals currently completing surgical training or residency from general surgery or a related specialty.
- All new fellowship applications must now follow the CPSA guidelines for achieving a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four categories for the IELTS Academic test. Other eligible tests now include the OET Medical and CELPIP Exams. More information can be found on the CPSA website.
Fellowship Goals
- Train fellows in clinical, administrative, and cultural competencies related to the delivery of care, partnership building, and health systems improvement in the field of global surgery.
- Develop fellows' skills in leadership, clinical care, system development, innovation, research, education, and teaching at health care centres in resource-limited settings locally and internationally.
Application
Interested candidates should submit the following documents as an application package to the Program Directors:
- One-page (single-spaced) personal statement articulating your experiences and interest in the fields of global surgery and acute care emergency surgery, as well as how you envision you will benefit from this fellowship.
- Up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Three (3) letters of reference, two (2) of which must be from surgeons.

Applications must be received on or before August 15 for the fellowship term commencing July 1 of the following year. Interviews will take place during November. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for an interview.

Pediatric Global Surgery Fellowship
Fellowship Description
The fellowship delivers a customizable and flexible curriculum aimed to develop skills and competencies for future leaders in global surgery for pediatrics. The program seeks to not only build competencies needed within the fellows’ future site of work, but also learn a different health system, surgical service and how quality improvement is measured here. Some of these processes can be translated to the fellow’s future work to advance childcare in a low to middle income country (LMIC). Further skills gained include system development and design, research, education, quality improvement and innovation.
In consultation with the program directors, the fellow will design and implement a tailored fellowship curriculum that best aligns with the interests and learning objectives identified by the fellow.
In general, the fellow can expect to undertake a portion of clinical training in Edmonton, Canada.
Eligibility
- This Fellowship is for individuals currently completed a recognized and accredited training program in pediatric surgery.
- Applicant is from a low resource setting (i.e. low- and middle- income country) and looking for further training.
- All new fellowship applications must now follow the CPSA guidelines for achieving a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four categories for the IELTS Academic test. Other eligible tests now include the OET Medical and CELPIP Exams. More information can be found on the CPSA website.
