NHTNE Fellowship

Neonatal Hemodynamics and Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography Fellowship (NHTNE)

Overview

The University of Alberta is pleased to invite applications for the Neonatal Hemodynamics and Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography Fellowship. The Neonatal-Perinatal and Pediatric Cardiology Program at the University of Alberta have been recognized as centers of Excellence in their fields. We believe that our NHTNE program would give the successful candidate a firm grounding in principles and clinical practice of echocardiography, advanced hemodynamic assessments and consultation that are required to practice in a tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit. The graduates of our program are now successful NHTNE neonatologists and colleagues in Canada and around the world.

The program has a successful internal and external collaboration model with National Hemodynamic Research Council (NHRC) among other. We are pleased to inform you that the University of Alberta NHTNE Fellowship Program is a royal college accredited program and the second NHTNE program in Canada.

Training experience

The NHTNE fellowship affiliated with University of Alberta is offered for individuals who have completed a traditional training in neonatology and have interest in the field of neonatal hemodynamics. In partnership with the Pediatric Cardiology team, trainees will be exposed to neonatal echocardiography with opportunity to observe fetal echocardiography as part of their training under the supervision of a pediatric cardiologist.

This is a one-year fully funded program with clinical service expectations as a departmental fellow. However, trainees will have protected time for the fellowship-related activities (non-clinical time).Trainees will be mentored by Neonatologists and Pediatric Cardiologists.

Training components include didactic education, scholarly projects, and scanning echocardiography log books. Trainees will get exposure to various types of cases ranging from extreme prematurity to term infants, pulmonary hypotension and meeting the requirements of the RCPSC and Area Focused Competency (AFC) diploma in NHTNE.

Upon successful completion of the program, the trainee will independently perform, interpret, and integrate echocardiographic assessments with clinical and other evolving technologies and provide a comprehensive hemodynamic plan for neonatal tertiary cardiovascular issues.
