Non Credit Opportunities

Students can find or design their own non-credit opportunities. The CSL Office approves a variety of non-credit opportunities that students can engage in as they pursue their CSL Certificate.  Students may apply to have a non-credit opportunity approved at any stage in their program; however, approval must have been granted before the application deadline for convocation.

You can view some examples of past Non-Credit Opportunities here.

Don’t have a partner organization already in mind for a Non-Credit Opportunity?  Here is a list of partners you can reach out to as a starting point.

How to do a Non-Credit Opportunity (NCO):

Step 1 - Confirm your placement with your community partner

Connect with your community partner to agree on the terms of your placement. Remember to discuss things like: scheduling requirements, a timeline, a communication plan, and any deliverables.

Step 2 - Apply

Submit a completed Non-Credit Opportunity Application Form  (make sure you are logged in to your UAlberta email account to access this form.)

Step 3 - Wait for Approval

Watch for an email indicating that CSL’s Director, Dr. David Peacock, has shared a document with you.  This email will give you access to your NCO Application document and include a message that either approves it or provides you with feedback to make adjustments so that it can be approved.

Step 4 - Do your Non-Credit Opportunity

Reconnect with your community partner to get started.  Follow through on any scheduled shifts, check-ins or other placement activities.  Don’t forget to complete the reflection component!

Step 5 - Complete your Non-Credit Opportunity

When you’ve completed your hours and reflection activities, fill out and submit the form: Request for Verification of NCO Completion. You will need to have the following documents ready to upload to your Google Form submission:

  1. A copy of your approved application (the Google Doc David shared with you in Step 3)
  2. Documentation from your partner organization that you completed your placement and turned over any related work to them
  3. Any project-related work and reflection materials

Once you have submitted your form and the accompanying documents, watch for an email indicating that CSL’s Director, Dr. David Peacock, has shared another document with you. This is your NCO Completion document* and it will include a message that either approves it or provides you with feedback to make adjustments so that it can be approved.

*We recommend that you retain this document for your records.
