Non-Profit Board Internship Program

This unpaid internship consists of three components that will require 50-60 hours in total over the course of eight months from September to April.

• A series of online workshops and in-person events: Workshops are delivered in collaboration with the Government of Alberta Community Development Unit, workshops provide training and discussion of key aspects of non-profit boards. Topics include: financial responsibilities, organization purpose and planning, building strong teams, and more. The in-person events include the program launch, the intern check-in and the graduation event.
• A board placement: Guided by volunteer mentors from each host board, the board placement affords interns the opportunity to attend and participate at board meetings using their newly acquired skills.
• A project to support board governance: To qualify for a NPBI Certificate, interns contribute a final project to their board, which they design and complete with the guidance of their mentors.

ELIGIBILITY

All registered U of A undergraduate and graduate students, both full-time and part-time, are welcome to apply. Students should have successfully completed 2 years of post-secondary education by the internship start date and be enrolled in classes for the duration of the program. 

HOW TO APPLY

Completed student application packages must include the following:

• An updated resume
• Contact information for two references (academic, personal, or employment) to be included in your resume
• Completed short-answer questions
  • What do you know about the NPBI program? (maximum 750 characters)
  • Why do you want to participate in this program? (maximum 750 characters)
  • What skills and attributes will you bring to a non-profit board? (maximum 1500 characters)
  • What you hope to achieve through this program and how this relates to your future goals? (maximum 1500 characters)

Eligible applicants will be contacted for an interview. Successful applicants will then be matched with a non-profit board based on their availability, preferences, skills and the needs of the board. Board matching is typically completed by the end of July.
