Certificate Program

What is it?

The Certificate in Community Engagement and Service-Learning allows students to demonstrate that they have significantly integrated community service-learning (CSL) into their postsecondary education. The knowledge and experience students gain through service-learning are relevant and applicable to a wide range of careers, including those in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the volunteer sector, business and government, and academic institutions. Students enrolled in ANY undergraduate program at the University of Alberta are eligible for the Certificate, which is received upon graduation and noted in the student transcript.

How do I get it?

To qualify, students must first fulfill all existing requirements for majors, minors, or honours in their respective departments. Then, students have 2 options:

1) Complete a minimum of 5 courses (15 credits) as follows:

  • At least one CSL-designated course (CSL 100, 200, 350, 370, or 480)
  • 4 courses (12 credits) from the list of academic courses approved by the CSL Program. Students must satisfactorily meet the CSL requirements of each course
- OR -
2) Complete a minimum of 4 courses (12 credits) and one non-credit opportunity as follows:
  • At least one CSL-designated course (CSL 100, 200, 350, 370, or 480)
  • 3 courses (9 credits) from the list of academic courses approved by the CSL Program. Students must satisfactorily meet the CSL requirements of each course

Where do I apply for it?

In order to receive credit for their Certificate, students must apply online through the Faculty of Arts Undergraduate Student Services - Forms for Students webpage (select the "Declaration or Change of Certificate(s)" form). Application can be made at any time, but no later than the deadline to apply for convocation. All non-credit opportunities must be approved prior to this deadline so that the CSL Program can confirm that students are eligible to receive the Certificate.
