#IBelieveYou Campaign

The U of A Sexual Assault Centre hosts Sexual Assault Awareness Weeks in October and February each year. During these events, the goal is to raise awareness about the issue of sexual assault and the services that the Sexual Assault Centre provides.

The #IBelieveYou Campaign is based on a simple idea regarding sexual assault disclosures. When a survivor of sexual assault discloses their experience to us, the best way to respond is by believing them. The campaign aims to increase public support for survivors, with the ultimate goal of creating safer and healthier communities.

When we believe survivors of sexual assault, we're encouraging survivors everywhere to feel safe in coming forward. Since the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS) launched the campaign in 2015, the percentage of folks in Alberta who said they would offer a positive response has gone from 42% to 72% (2017).

The impact saying #IBelieveYou has had on survivors seeking counselling services through AASAS has gone up 53% since 2015.
