Fan Wang, '25 MFM

MFM China Program Partner - 15 June 2026

As an outstanding graduate of the ‘25 MFM program in Shenzhen, Fan Wang currently serves as a core institutional business role at China Securities Co., Ltd. (CSC). In the following conversation, she shares how her professional outlook and work approach have begun to evolve through the influence of the Master of Financial Management curriculum, philosophy and the program alumni.

Professional expertise: Building core industry competitiveness through the MFM curriculum

Fan Wang portraitFan Wang’s career development is rooted in the systematic training provided by the Master of Financial Management program. As a top-tier program focusing on the "integration of financial practice and management,” the MFM curriculum is precisely tailored to meet industry needs,"said Wang.

In-depth lectures on corporate capital structure optimization and M&A valuation equipped her with a solid grasp of the core logic behind listed companies’ capital operations at an early stage, extensive simulations using real-market cases fostered her practical capabilities in asset management for financial institutions and systematic training in risk pricing and quantitative analysis further shaped her professional mindset of "dynamic balance between risk and return."

These unique knowledge accumulations from the MFM program have become her "core competitiveness" in deeply engaging with the Greater  Bay Area in China (GBA) capital market.

Today, in response to the diverse needs of GBA enterprises and financial institutions, she delivers targeted customized solutions: for listed companies’ capital operation needs, she applies the valuation models and industry analysis methods learned from the MFM program to design integrated strategies for advanced manufacturing and new energy enterprises, covering private placement issuance, block trading and shareholder relationship management.

She helped a new energy enterprise optimize its capital structure, successfully attracting three long-term strategic investors within six months and increasing financing efficiency by 40 per cent compared to the industry average. For the asset allocation needs of financial institutions such as fund companies and insurance firms, she uses portfolio optimization tools and risk hedging logic trained in MFM courses to provide full-process support — from bond portfolio adjustment and equity asset timing to the application of derivative instruments. She assisted an insurance institution in increasing the annualized return of its asset portfolio by 12 per cent while controlling risk volatility within the target range.

“The educational philosophy of the MFM program has significantly contributed to my professional development,” says Wang.

Mindset shaping: The MFM program’s philosophy as the cornerstone for long-term development

The educational philosophy of the MFM program at the University of Alberta School of Business has profoundly shaped her professional thinking and work style. During her studies, the Global Financial Markets case series helped her develop the thinking habit of "examining local needs from a global perspective." This habit proved particularly crucial when serving GBA clients. When working with a manufacturing enterprise planning cross-border mergers and acquisitions, she and her team applied the regulatory compliance key points and valuation adjustment logic of cross-border transactions to help the enterprise avoid legal risks in overseas markets while reducing financing costs through optimized transaction structures.

“I learnt the continuous iteration of financial innovation awareness from the program and this has become my confidence in responding to industry changes,”  says Wang.

The trend of AI quantitative trading in China’s capital market sparked her research enthusiasm in fintech. After graduation, she continued the research habits cultivated by the MFM program, independently deepening her studies on topics such as the application of AI in asset allocation and green financial product design. To date, she has designed ESG-integrated capital operation plans and AI-assisted dynamic risk control systems for over five clients, helping them achieve dual improvements in business performance and capital value while practicing sustainable development concepts.

This growth model of "taking MFM thinking as an anchor and constantly breaking professional boundaries" is the best testament to the program’s educational outcomes, says Wang.

Alumni value: Building a link between the university and the GBA as an MFM graduate

Wang has always adhered to the philosophy of “giving back to the university and sharing value,”  and is committed to using her own resources to build a bridge between the MFM program, the university and the GBA financial industry.

On one hand, by relying on her practical experience in the GBA capital market, she plans to provide "practical teaching support" for the MFM program. By actively participating in alumni activities, she transforms her client service experience into real cases for students to study. Through offered seminars, she will share the latest developments in the capital market with current MFM students, helping them shorten the adaptation cycle between “classroom learning and workplace practice.”

On the other hand, she recognizes that the interdisciplinary talents with global financial perspective and local practical capabilities cultivated by the MFM program are exactly the core talents urgently needed by the GBA financial industry. She is promoting a Strategic Cooperation Plan between China Securities Co., Ltd. (CSC) and the MFM Program of the University of Alberta. She establishing a GBA Learning Base for the MFM program, regularly providing corporate venues for students to participate in after-class activities and industry salons, and inviting corporate experts to join discussions to further enhance students’ professional capabilities; meanwhile, she will launch an "MFM Alumni Talent Green Channel" to give priority to recruiting MFM graduates into CSC’s GBA team.

This not only provides a high-quality channel for the university to export talents but also delivers globally competitive financial talents to enterprises in the region. This sense of responsibility — “empowering both the MFM program and cultivating talents for the industry” — fully demonstrates her responsibility and value as an outstanding graduate.
