Scholarships, Awards, & Funding

Every year, students in the Faculty of Engineering have access to more than $1.5 million in scholarships. These scholarships are broken down in to several categories, which are described below.

Entrance Awards

Entrance Awards are for students who are entering the first year within the Faculty of Engineering from high school or are entering with less than 24 post-secondary transfer credits. Students must be new to the U of A to be eligible for these awards. There are hundreds of Entrance Awards available to Engineering Students ranging from $1,000 one time awards to $50,000 renewable awards. The criteria for these awards can include academic achievements, leadership and community involvement, athletics and other factors. Awards for Continuing Students

Continuing Student Awards are for students who have successfully completed at least one year in our program and are continuing into a further year of study in the Faculty of Engineering. There are hundreds of awards available for students continuing within the Faculty of Engineering, with values ranging up to $10,000. The majority of these awards are by nomination from the Faculty of Engineering and do not need an application. Potential nominees for these awards are automatically generated by an inter-departmental panel of faculty and staff from within the Faculty of Engineering.

The Office of the Registrar & Student awards also offers scholarships for continuing students which are open to all students on campus. Some of these awards are by nomination of the Faculty of Engineering while others require an application be filled out.

Awards for Graduate Students

Financial support from the Faculty of Engineering for graduate students is abundant, totalling $20.4 million in 2015-2016.

Graduate students have opportunities to access funding through a variety of sources including tuition support, research assistantships, teaching assistantships and more. Funding approaches vary among departments.

Students should contact the department offering their program of interest to find out how graduate students are supported.
