Increasing Community Capacity for Research on Indigenous Children and Youth

Principal Investigators: Jeffrey Bisanz and Rebecca Gokiert

Duration: 2006-2008

The Early Childhood Measurement and Evaluation Resource Centre (ECMERC) led a project aimed at addressing the central problem of how to support those that need to provide culturally appropriate assessment and programming for Indigenous children and youth. These issues have been identified as critically important in the early learning and childcare community and across school districts. ECMERC hired three researchers (a postdoctoral fellow, a doctoral student, and a research assistant) to generate three documents:

  1. The research report explored the research literature in assessment across a number of domains including cognition, achievement, language, adaptive and maladaptive behaviour, social/emotional functioning, and visual-motor functioning.
  2. The second product is an executive summary of the research report.
  3. The third product is a user-friendly information guide about measurement and evaluation issues, things to consider, and common biases when working with Indigenous children and youth.
