PhD Alumni Study

How are PhD alumni from the U of A contributing to Alberta's and Canada's economic and social sectors?

In 2019 the U of A's then Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies and Research (FGSR) embarked on the Career Preparation and Outcomes Study, to answer this question. Our survey revealed that four in five U of A PhDs secured employment before graduating, demonstrating the demand for and value of PhDs in today’s complex global job market.

We systematically collected publicly available career information to get a picture of employment outcomes for 5000+ PhDs who graduated between 2005 and 2017. The study successfully and reliably secured career outcomes for 85 per cent of this population, a total of 4,365 U of A PhD graduates.
