Graduate Studies

History and Classics, two of the original departments in what was then the Faculty of Arts and Sciences when the University of Alberta was founded in 1908, merged in 1994. Since then we have offered an increasingly interdisciplinary learning environment, with graduate training in history, archaeology, language, literature, and, most recently, ancient societies and cultures. In 2020, Religious Studies joined the department, further enriching our community of scholars. Within that framework, students in the History, Classics, and Religious Studies streams can choose to focus in one of several Areas of Study. Reflecting the national and international reputation of its faculty, the Department boasts a number of recognized areas of excellence in research and attracts graduate students not only from Alberta and across Canada but also from overseas.

Through faculty appointments and research interests, our Department maintains close links with a number of other campus units. They are the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies; the Departments of Anthropology, English and Film Studies, MLCSHuman Ecology, Philosophy and Sociology; Faculty of Arts interdisciplinary programs in Digital Humanities, and Science, Technology and Society; the Faculties of Native Studies, Law, and Medicine and Dentistry; and the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies.

The University of Alberta, which has approximately 40,000 students and is among Canada's Top 5 research universities, has outstanding facilities and research opportunities for advanced students. The Library System licenses a wide range of electronic resources as well as housing several million volumes, microforms, manuscripts, data sets, and government documents pertinent to graduate study.
