Strategies and Practices for Leading Hybrid Work Teams

COVID-19 has accelerated the hybrid workplace model that has been growing for some time. It has taught organizations a lot about traditional work models and has challenged ideas about how employees do their best work and how teams can be most effective. Beginning February 2022, the Work from Home Program arrangements will be formalized where operationally appropriate, allowing employees to combine working on-campus and working from home. The resulting hybrid workplace offers managers/supervisors the opportunity to increase team effectiveness, productivity, and well-being.

The hybrid work model will not change what quality work looks like or expectations around productivity or accountability. The hybrid model does offer managers/supervisors an opportunity to increase team effectiveness.

Recent literature has also noted that the flexibility associated with hybrid work allows employees to choose how to do their best work, leading to better employee experiences, performance outcomes, and engagement.

Leading hybrid teams does not require you to learn a new skill set. Communication, collaboration, team building, inclusion, and emotional intelligence competencies will continue to be important. While managing a hybrid team does not require you to develop a new skill set, the hybrid workplace will require you to be more intentional with the best management and leadership practices you are already using.
