BSU-AIS Casual English Language Support

The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation is looking for an individual to provide virtual English language support for our students at the Beijing Sport University Alberta International School of Recreation, Sport and Tourism, in Hainan Province, China (AIS). This is a casual appointment at approximately 0.3 FTE. The time period for this appointment is March 1, 2024 through May 31, 2024.

This individual will provide broad course assistance as it relates to the English language (not subject matter) in addition to helping the students improve their English, not necessarily through formal lessons.

For this position, some key responsibilities include:

  • Excellent English language proficiency
  • Undergraduate degree (Education, ESL or Recreation, Sport, Leisure, and Tourism preferred)
  • Experience working with young adults or adults in an academic setting involving english language training; Good listening skills and ability to interact with students to improve their spoken and written English
  • Availability to connect to students through zoom and ualberta email account;
  • Availability to work mainly in the evenings or early mornings (Edmonton time)
  • Providing regular updates regarding English language to the KSR International Director and Manager of International & Community Education

Some preferred qualifications include:

  • Evidence of ESL instruction training
  • Ability to speak Mandarin
  • Able to work with and use the University of Alberta Learning Management System
  • Subject matter knowledge in sport management, recreation, leisure, and tourism Teaching assistant experience in a post secondary setting

About the International School

The University of Alberta's Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation and Beijing Sport University (BSU) launched the Beijing Sport University Alberta International School of Recreation, Sport and Tourism officially in September 2023. The School is located in the International Education Innovation Pilot Zone in Hainan, China. Hainan, known as the “Hawaii of China”, is an island located in the South China Sea, Southeast of mainland China.  The campus is located on the southeast part of the island.

The School offers the KSR Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Sport and Tourism (BARST) undergraduate degree.  Students enrolled in the School take all of their courses at the campus in the Pilot Zone.There are 63 undergraduate students recruited from all over China in the 2023/24 first year inaugural cohort.  KSR courses are taught in English. English language experience varies between students, however all students are required to meet English language capacity benchmarks and to meet the University of Alberta English Language requirements in their 4th year of study.  The School provides dedicated English language support for students.
