Universal Change Rooms


The universal change rooms in the Van Vliet Complex provide a safe, inclusive change room option for all members of the University of Alberta community.

Aiming to create an accessible space for students, staff, and community members of all abilities, gender identities, and religions, the universal change rooms also provide a safe option for those who have family and group change room needs.

"The universal change room is for everyone," says Cheryl Harwardt, Director of Campus & Community Recreation. "The space is accessible to people with reduced mobility, and allows people of all gender identities, parents, caregivers and groups (schools, day camps, daycare, etc.) to be together in the same space."

The universal change rooms are designed with safety and inclusiveness in mind. Features include:

  • 23 Private change cubicles
  • 6 Private shower stalls
  • 3 Open (no nudity) showers for patrons who are using the pools
  • 9 Private washroom stalls
  • 2 Accessible private washroom stalls
  • 1 Accessible private shower stalls
  • 2 Accessible private change cubicles
  • 342 lockers (includes full, ½ and ¼ lockers), all of which are day-use only
  • 4 baby change stations

What is a Universal Change Room?

A universal change room is an accessible space for everyone. The space is accessible to people with reduced mobility and allows people of all gender identities, parents, caregivers, and groups (schools, day camps, daycare, etc.) to be together in the same space.

The rules of the universal change rooms are as follows:

  • Patrons are required to remain clothed unless in a private change cubicle, shower, or bathroom stall.
  • No nudity is permitted in open areas.
  • All lockers within the universal change room are DAY USE ONLY. A fine will be charged for items left overnight.
  • Photography and video recording are strictly prohibited.
  • Ensure that all personal belongings are secure at all times. The University of Alberta is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.
  • Please report any suspicious activities to a staff member immediately.
  • Please be respectful of those around you and the facility.

Q: Can I enter the universal change room with someone else who is of a different gender/sex?
A: Yes, the universal change room is designed to allow for this. There are private change cubicles, private showers, and washroom stalls for users.

A: No, please rent a lock from Facility Services or bring your own. The University of Alberta is not responsible for any items left behind, unlocked, or stolen.

Q: What is a change cubicle? Is it lockable?

A: A change cubicle is a private stall for users to access to change their clothes in private. Yes, the private stall cubicles, showers, and washroom stalls can all be locked.

Q: What is acceptable attire when in the open spaces of the universal change room?
A: Fully clothed or swimsuits (one or two pieces suits and swim trunks/board shorts), athletic wear (this could include a sports bra)

A: The universal change room

Q: What is the purpose of the open showers?
A: The open showers are to be utilized by patrons who are using the pools - it is an opportunity to rinse before entering the pool with your swimsuit on. Nudity is strictly prohibited here and a swimsuit must be worn.

A: Nudity, undergarments (boxers, briefs, fashion bra or underwear)
