Maple Leaf Room, Lister Conference Centre
116 Street and 87 Avenue, University of Alberta
Writing Studies at the University of Alberta invites teachers from across the province to participate in a full-day workshop with one of North America's foremost scholars in the field of Writing Studies. Dr. Cheryl Glenn will lead this workshop, in collaboration with Dr. Roger Graves (Director of Writing Across the Curriculum at U of A) as part of a two-week series of public lectures, workshops and panels, made possible through the U of A's Distinguished Visitors Fund.
Teaching with writing helps students write to learn, write to understand, and write to plan. Teaching with writing is not for English teachers only; it is for all instructors who want their students to engage more deeply with their subject and retain that knowledge longer. This workshop is open to all teachers or future teachers across the curriculum, K-university. Participants will be invited to engage in discussion on how to teach students to write, integrate writing into the classroom at all stages of learning, and help students navigate transitions from one level of study to the next. Teachers will leave with a strengthened awareness of the role of writing in learning and discovery across all subject areas.
Dr. Cheryl Glenn is Liberal Arts Research Professor of English and Women's Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, co-director of Penn State's Center for Democratic Deliberation, and author of the landmark Unspoken: A Rhetoric of Silence (Southern Illinois University Press, 2004). She also teaches rhetoric and writing at Middlebury College's Bread Loaf Graduate School of English, a summer graduate program geared to secondary-school teachers.
