Sunday 11 May at the Global Visions Film Festival

05 May 2014

The world premiere of the one hour documentary, Albert Karvonen: Philosophies on Life, Nature, and Wildlife Filmmaking, takes place on Sunday, May 11 at 1:45 pm at the Metro Cinema (Garneau Theatre) during Edmonton's Global Visions Film Festival. A Q & A - with father and daughter, Albert and Ava Karvonen - and reception will follow the screening.

In the documentary, Ava Karvonen, MACT student (Cohort 2012) follows her father with a camera through the four seasons as he walks the land around his lakeside home in Northern Alberta, reflecting on his life, his career as a wildlife filmmaker and his philosophies on the environment.

"My father has taught me to look at the world with fresh eyes every day", says filmmaker, Ava Karvonen. "He knows this land intimately and can tell anyone who shares the path with him all about the animals and plants that inhabit the forest. Every day he walks through the forest and when the snow lies too deep for him to walk, he puts on his cross-country skis. He's in his eighties now and I wanted to capture the essence of his legacy while he is still with us".

"In Canada, we have around 25% of the world's boreal forest and it's here that you have a complete ecosystem: all the animals and all the plants are interrelated, they are very connected", says 83 year old Albert Karvonen. "So, you see evidence of all of this connection every day when you go out to walk".

This documentary is a gentle testament to the films, photographs, and philosophies of filmmaker, naturalist and teacher, Alberta Karvonen. It is also a story about aging, preparing for death, and the legacy one leaves behind.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.

Albert Karvonen: Philosophies on Life, Nature, and Wildlife Filmmaking was written, directed and produced by Ava Karvonen with support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, National Film Board of Canada's Filmmaker Assistance Program and Studio Post.
