Finding balance in a digital world: strategic decision making at the BBC

Across an increasingly fragmented audience base, public broadcasters like the BBC have to invest carefully to continue to deliver impactful services and content into a diverse market if they are to survive. Managing this process effectively is a tricky balancing act requiring a clear view of current needs and targets, constraints and future trends. While it may be difficult to pull off, being able to perform this balancing act well is of critical importance not only to public service broadcasters, but also commercial broadcasters and platforms, infrastructure providers, technology service companies and regulators. In this presentation I will talk about how the BBC has tackled this question, and how some of the approaches and lessons learned there could be applied more generally to media businesses and to other sectors that might be relevant to students and professionals alike.
