New Opportunities for the Study of Indian Classical Music

The Department of Music is pleased to announce that, beginning in the Fall Semester of 2009, private instruction in Indian classical music will be available to students at the University of Alberta. This new opportunity builds on the department's long history of excellence in the performance of music as well as on its thriving program in the study of musical traditions of the world and of the Indian subcontinent in particular, and it contributes to the developing strength of the Faculty of Arts in Indian Studies.
Instruction will be available for a limited number of students in sitar, tabla, and voice. Students will be selected on the basis of a brief interview/audition and will be able to register for instruction in one of several 3 or 6 cw courses, open both to non-BMus students and to BMus students as a second study. Interest, commitment, and general musical aptitude will be the primary criteria for selection; prior study of Indian music is not required. Students studying in these courses will also be expected to participate in the Indian Music Ensemble (MUSIC x43).
Interview/auditions will take place during the first week of classes. For further information, please contact Sharmila Mathur, director of the Indian Music Ensemble (sm50@ualberta.ca).
