The Canadian University Music Society Composition Competition names U of A Graduate Students

The Department of Music is proud to announced The Canadian University Music Society has named Colin Labadie as the winner of its 2012 Student Composer Competition ($750 prize). Labadie's work, Elusions for string quartet, will be performed by the Penderecki String Quartet as part of a concert of contemporary music that will take place in Maureen Forrester Hall at Wilfrid Laurier University, the evening of June 1, 2012. Colin Labadie is a doctoral student at the University of Alberta.

The jury-Peter Hatch (Wilfrid Laurier University, chair of the jury), Jérome Blais (Dalhousie University), Dorothy Chang (University of British Columbia) and Jerzy Kaplanek (Penderecki Quartet)-also selected a runner up: honourable mention goes to André Mestre , a Master's student at the University of Alberta, for his work Diwan for string quartet.
