Winners of the 2008 Concert Artists Guild International Competition and the 2010 Young Canadian Musicians Award, Afiara also took top prizes at the Munich ARD International Music Competition and the Banff International String Quartet Competition, where they were also awarded the Szekely Prize for best Beethoven interpretation.

Committed to education and connecting with its audience, the Afiara String Quartet is passionate about exploring new music while introducing fresh insight to classical repertoire. The Afiara players have worked with musicians and ensembles including the American, Cavani, Emerson, Kronos, St. Lawrence, Takacs and Ying Quartets, Earl Carlyss, James Dunham, Henk Guittart, Bonnie Hampton, and at the San Francisco Conservatory, where they were formed, with Paul Hersh, Mark Sokol and Ian Swensen.

Dedicated to excellence and innovation in the creation, performance, study and teaching of music, the Department of Music preserves classic traditions while breaking new paths, and is proud to welcome the Afiara String Quartet as the 2011/12 Quartet in Residence.
