Sarah McLachlan brought her signature grace and sincerity to the U of A stage last week to commemorate graduates at the 2013 Fall Convocation. Noted for her "inspiring contributions as a singer, songwriter, philanthropist, mentor and role model," McLachlan also received an honorary doctor of laws degree before engaging attendees with a moving speech and performance. McLachlan played two of her best-known songs--I Will Remember You and Angel--to an enthralled audience.

Following the convocation event, the singer-songwriter made her way across campus to attend the reception for Barefoot in the Backyard Edmonton. The event, held in September, raised funds for her music school as well as three local art groups, including the U of A's Fine Arts programs. Later, McLachlan confirmed the importance of arts education in society.

"I think it's imperative for children, youth and young adults to have art and culture in their lives," she said. "It raises well-rounded children and adults who can think critically and creatively."
