The Music Department would like to extend its warmest congratulations to doctoral candidate Rob Curtis on his 2014 Faculty of Arts Teaching Award. These awards are presented annually to celebrate outstanding teaching talent in the Faculty.
Having formally begun his undergraduate studies in Music at the University of Alberta in 1999, Rob's educational experience has certainly come full circle. Rob teaches and conducts the university-wide Concert Choir, an ensemble that welcomes singers from diverse academic disciplines such as business, science, education and the arts. As a Master's student with the department, Rob also taught Aural and Keyboard Skills to many young U of A musicians. When asked to describe his pedagogical approach, he says that he focuses on inspiring students and fostering skills that extend beyond the world of music.
"I strive to share my passion and enthusiasm for the subject material with my students, and to create an atmosphere where they feel engaged and can take ownership of our repertoire as a group. A class such as Concert Choir also teaches a number of soft skills, in addition to musicianship and choral technique, and I encourage students to grow in those areas throughout the year."
Besides leading the department's largest vocal ensemble and managing his busy study schedule, Rob is currently the Music Director of the award-winning i Coristi Chamber Choir, which was founded and previously directed by Dr. Debra Cairns. He is on track to complete his doctoral studies in Choral Conducting this year and looks forward to his convocation in November 2014.
