Ever wonder what makes the human singing voice so magical?

Find out when opera star Krisztina Szabó teaches a master class for six students with the UAlberta Voice Area on Monday, January 23.

"Our students learn so much from artists who are actively performing," says Elizabeth Turnbull, voice instructor in the Department of Music. "We are fortunate to have Krisztina taking time from her busy schedule to visit with our students."

Ms. Szabó is currently starring in Edmonton Opera's production of Cinderella (La Cenerentola) by Giaochino Rossino. Her appearance at the University of Alberta is, in part, thanks to the generosity of Edmonton Opera, which has cosponsored a master class series with the UAlberta Voice Area for the 2016-17 academic year. Earlier this year, soprano Michele Capalbo, who played Liu in Edmonton Opera's acclaimed production of Turandot, also hosted a master class with the Voice Area.

"We're so grateful for Edmonton Opera's support in bringing Krisztina, Michele and all our guest artists to the U of A," says John Tessier, assistant professor and coordinator of the Voice and Opera programs. "The expertise these artists bring to the program is so valuable for our students as they prepare to launch their respective careers."

"It is always a privilege to get to learn from such outstanding performers," says soprano Louise Ashdown, a fourth-year voice student. "There is always something new to learn from their unique approaches to technique and expression. Often, trying other methods really help to make everything we've been working on with our teachers click."

The master class with Krisztina Szabó begins at 7 pm and is both free admission and open to the general public. Edmonton Opera's production of Cinderella (La Cenerentola) by Giaochino Rossini, starring Ms. Szabó as Cinderella and Mr. Tessier as the Prince, will be shown at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on February 4, 7 and 9.
