Departmental News

The Department of Pharmacology invites you to participate in our 7th Annual Susan Dunn Memorial Golf Tournament, on July 27, 2017 at the Rundle Park Golf Course.

The annual golf tournament is to honour the memory of Dr Susan Dunn who served as Chair of the Department of Pharmacology from 2008 to the time of her death on February 18th, 2011. Susan was recruited to the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta in 1988. She was promoted to full Professor in 1993 and served as Deputy Chair of the Department from 2003 until 2008. Susan is remembered by colleagues for her scientific rigour and understated leadership. Students also remember her as an exemplary role model. Her guidance and support are missed by all who had the good fortune to work with her.

The Pharmacology Research Day 2017 (June 23, 2017) was well attended and a resounding success.
A big thank you goes out to Stephana Cherak and Andrew Woodman for organizing the meeting. Thank you to Ines Zuna for being the MC for the day and Jen Beattie, Dancy Bogdanovic and Linda Burke for all their help with everything along the way.
A special thank you to the adjudicators Dr David Fedida (Keynote Speaker-UBC) and Dr James Hammond (UofA-Pharmacology). Finally, thank you to Dr Stephane Bourque, Dr Simon Gosgnach (Physiology), Dr Paul Jurasz, Dr Frances Plane, Dr Rick Schulz and Dr Amy Tse for helping judge with the poster presentations.

Congratulations to Richard Yan-Do (Dr Patrick MacDonald) for being awarded the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) March 2017 Med Star Graduate Student Award. The award is in recognition of their outstanding research publication in Diabetes "A Glycine-Insulin Autocrine Feedback Loop Enhances Insulin Secretion from Human B-Cells and Is Impaired In Type 2 Diabetes".

Dr Martin Davies

Congratulations to Dr Martin Davies for receiving the 2017 William Hardy Alexander Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. This award "recognizes teaching excellence by academic staff publicly, publicizes such excellence to the University and the wider community, encourages the pursuit of teaching excellence, and promotes informed discussion of teaching and its improvement at the University of Alberta". Dr William ColmersDr William Colmers has been named the Alumnus of the Year by the Hotchkiss Brain Institute in recognition of scientific, professional and academic excellence. This achievement was in recognition of his outstanding work in studying the actions of Neuropeptide Y in the central nervous system and its involvement in epilepsy, obesity, cachexia and anxiety.
