Department of Physics Astronomical Observatory

The Observatory will be hosting public solar observing sessions from September to December 2022. We will also be offering a small number of tours to schools, camps, and other education-oriented groups. To book a tour, visit the Field Trips link.

The Observatory will be closed when the temperature falls to -20 C or lower.


Public Hours

Solar Observing - Thursdays

12 pm to 1 pm.

Evening Observing - Thursdays

September: 8 pm - 9 pm
October: 8 pm - 9 pm
November: 7 pm - 8 pm
December: 7 pm - 8pm

Visitors may drop in anytime during this hour. No tickets required. Admission is free.



The Department of Physics Astronomical Observatory is located in CCIS 5-240 on the West end of the 5th floor of the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science on the main campus of the University of Alberta. Click here for directions.


Field Trips and Group Visits

School groups and other education-oriented groups can book a private visit. These visits are free of charge. Please contact us at least one month before your anticipated visit date since there is high demand for these visits and we have limited availability. Click here for more information.
