The University of Alberta is dedicated to supporting students financially and recognizing their achievements throughout their four-year degree and upon graduation. 

 If you are a continuing student (in your second year or later), you may be eligible for the following scholarship opportunities:

Indigenous awards

  • Proof of First Nations, Métis, or Inuit identity

    Students receiving an Aboriginal award offer will be required to provide proof of First Nations, Métis, or Inuit identity. If you have previously provided proof and need to update your document type, please contact Examples of acceptable proof include:

    • a certified copy of a Status card

    • a certified copy of a Métis membership card from one of the five Métis Provincial Affiliates; Métis Nation of Alberta, Métis Nation of Ontario, Manitoba Métis Federation, Métis Nation Saskatchewan, Métis Nation British Columbia. Additionally, the student may present a membership card for the Métis Settlements General Council

    • a certified copy of a Nunavut Trust Certificate card

    • proof that an ancestor’s name has been entered 1) in the Indian Register according to the Indian Act, or 2) on the band list of an individual band, or 3) as beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement or other claim regions such as Nunatsiavut, Nunavik, and Inuvialuit

    • evidence of an ancestor who received a land grant or a scrip grant under the Manitoba Act or Dominion Lands Act

    • written confirmation of Aboriginal identity from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada or Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated

    • written confirmation of membership by a band council which has enacted its own band membership code

    • a Statutory Declaration by an applicant attesting to Aboriginal ancestry, supplemented by letters of documentation supporting the Declaration 1) from an official of a recognized native organization, or 2) from a relative in an Aboriginal community, or 3) from the applicant describing involvement with Aboriginal issues, or

    • photocopy of parent’s/aunt’s/uncle’s or sibling’s valid status or membership card, along with a long form birth certificate(s) or baptismal certificate(s) that clearly shows the relationship to the person identified.

    Other forms of proof may be considered. Please see the individual award competition pages for more details on eligibility and acceptable proof for specific awards.
