Message from the Chair - Computing Science

Chair of the Department of Computing Science Mario Nascimento shares a message with alumni.

Mario Nascimento - 21 September 2020

To the Department of Computing Science alumni family,

Welcome to Alumni Week(end) 2020: Campus to Couch Edition. This is an atypical year in many accounts and I do wish you and yours are all well. I am glad to have this opportunity to meet you all virtually this year and I am pleased to showcase some of the many remarkable things that our department has to offer.

Over the next week I encourage you to learn more about the University of Alberta’s newest signature area, AI4Society, led by Professor Eleni Stroulia in the Department of Computing Science. AI4Society, is hosting two webinars on September 25: Introduction: AI4Society, a Signature Research Area and Our University, Our Work: Artificial Intelligence Around Campus

I also welcome you to join me in congratulating Martha White, who received the 2020 Killam Accelerator Research Award earlier this month. This prestigious award will support her cutting-edge research on machine learning.

Next, hear from your fellow alumnus Jack Newton on how his experience studying computing science at the University of Alberta helped to pave the way to founding Clio, a cloud-based legal technology company that has grown to be one of Canada’s most successful companies.

Thank you, and I look forward to connecting with you again soon.

Mario
