Community and Local Opportunities


  • International Week: International Week is an annual event orchestrated through University of Alberta International (UAI). This event provides an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to hear about innovative research, projects and communities contributing to a hopeful future. The event includes films, theatre presentations, dance lessons, art-making and other interactive exhibits all focused on improving the human condition.

  • Community Cupboard: The Community Cupboard is a non-profit, donation-based, year-round initiative by the Global Nursing Office to aid any student in need of food or personal hygiene products. Pick up and donations located in ECHA 5-286A. Questions? Email nursing.global@ualberta.ca.

  • Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF): The Edmonton International Film Festival is an event that takes place in our city every year in the fall. The EIFF provides an opportunity to experience world class cinema from filmmakers around the globe.

  • Heritage Days: The Heritage Festival is an annual event that takes place during the August long weekend at Hawrelak Park in Edmonton. It is a three-day festival that highlights Canada's vibrant multicultural heritage. The event features pavilions representing over eighty-five cultures from all over the world.

  • Community Service Learning: Community Service-Learning (CSL) integrates service-learning into existing courses in diverse subjects and disciplines. CSL provides an opportunity for a student and a professor to collaborate on an accredited course to focus on an area of global or aboriginal interest with a volunteer community service component.   • Faculty of Nursing Mustard Seed Initiative: Volunteer to help prepare a meal at The Mustard Seed. Since 2010 the Faculty of Nursing has partnered with the Mustard Seed to help support this organization's evening meal program which provides a hot meal to Edmonton's low-income and homeless community.   • Global Health Rounds: Partake in presentations that discuss global health subject matters. The overall theme of Rounds 2019 to 2020 is the health of underprivileged populations regardless of location and addressing disparities. For more information, click here.
