Describe your board/organization, their objectives, and your responsibilities during the NPBI internship.

My organization is Net Impact, an organization whose mission is to inspire, educate and equip our community to create a more socially and environmentally sustainable Edmonton by harnessing the power of business. My responsibilities included attending board meetings and working closely with the Chair of Communications to enhance their social media presence.

Can you describe your project and how you think it will benefit your board?

I designed a profile template for the organization's newsletter and social media pages (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook). This profile template will introduce the current board members to the general public. The template I created follows their company colours, logo requirements, and it was approved by their Chair of Communications.

Furthermore, I used the template to create 10 magazine-style profiles that were published on the organization's newsletter and social media pages. It benefits the board as it creates content for their followers and subscribers, advertises the work that they do, and showcases the wonderful faces behind the organization. It also creates value for the members as they are celebrated for the work that they do. In advertising the board of members, we hope to draw in more members to sign up for the following years to come.

What stands out for you as key learning moments as a result of volunteering on a board?

I learned of the work that it takes to create professional marketing content such as newsletters and social media posts for a larger organization. It is not as simple as taking a picture and clicking "post" on your phone! There is a lot of work done behind the scenes to ensure that the caption, word count, colours, logos, and brand are being represented in an excellent and captivating manner.

Would you recommend this program to U of A students and why?

I definitely recommend this program to all U of A students! It pushes you out of your comfort zone to see what it takes to run a large organization. As well, it is so inspiring to see people who live such busy lives in balancing their careers, family, and more make it a priority to continue giving back to the community.
