Two winning essays will be selected and the recipients will each receive a $1000 award.

Eligibility

The award is restricted to current students of the University of Alberta in the following Continuing Education programs: Occupational Health and Safety Certificate and/or Professional Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. Current students are those who have not yet graduated at the time of submission.

Criteria and How to Apply

Students must write a 1500 to 2000 word essay that identifies a psycho-social or mental-health concern in the workplace (i.e., burnout, compassion fatigue, stress, vicarious trauma, bullying), and demonstrates and discusses a strategic solution with details on how you would implement it.

The essay judges are members of the wellness community (from industry and government) who have experience in workplace wellness.

Your essay will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Interest: Writing exhibits originality of thought, analytical acuteness, and overall coherence of exposition. (60%)
  • Organization: Each paragraph develops one idea and contributes to an understanding of the main idea or thesis. (30%)
  • Correctness of Style: The language exhibits a strong, individualized voice that is free from distracting grammatical and mechanical mistakes. (10%)
