Opportunity Overview
Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows make substantial contributions to research and represent the future of scientific leadership. However, living with diabetes involves significant out-of-pocket expenses—such as co-pays for drugs, devices, and supplies—that add financial burdens to standard academic stipends.
Thanks to a generous commitment from the Chan family, the Facilitating Equity in Diabetes Research (FEDR) Fund was established to support Alberta Diabetes Institute (ADI) trainees who live with diabetes. The Living With Diabetes Award provides annual funding to reduce financial barriers associated with managing the disease while pursuing graduate and post-doctoral studies.

Eligibility
- Graduate students (MSc or PhD) and post-doctoral fellows enrolled or employed full-time at the University of Alberta.
- Your primary supervisor must be an ADI Member.
- Your research project must be focused on diabetes.
- Must be living with diabetes requiring pharmacotherapy.
- Note: New applicants will be required to provide a declaration of eligibility and may be asked to present confirmation documentation (which will not be retained).

Privacy & Confidentiality
- Confidentiality Assured: Any personal information collected during the application process will be kept strictly confidential. Names of award recipients will not be published or publicly disclosed.
- Acknowledgement: While general support from the ADI should be acknowledged in publications and presentations, there is no expectation to specifically identify the FEDR Living With Diabetes Award unless the recipient chooses to disclose it themselves.
Reporting Requirements
- Recipients must provide a brief personal statement describing the impact of the award, which may be shared anonymously with donors.
- The report must be submitted within 12 months of receiving the award and can be submitted alongside a funding renewal application.
