The Department of Extension was formed in 1912, a mere four years after the University of Alberta itself was founded in 1908, and visual arts have played a significant role since these early days. As a distinct program, it traces its roots back to the programs initiated by HG Glyde who, along with the likes of Annora Brown, brought painting courses to rural communities in the 1930s. Over the past hundred years, the subsequent impact that the program and those involved have had on arts in the province cannot be overstated: including the founding of the Banff Summer School (now the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity), to the formation of Latitude 53 by Harry Savage and Sylvain Voyer. Although 2023 marks the final year of the formal certificate program, and Extension has become Online and Continuing Education, this creates different opportunities moving forward. For its part, Lasting Legacy offers a glimpse into this incredible program and the stories of the people whose impact is undeniable.
