EXFRM 2714 Vestibular + Concussion Management for Healthcare Professionals

This online micro-course is an introduction to vestibular pathologies such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, peripheral hypofunction, central vertigo and post-concussion syndrome. Rehabilitation management strategies are reviewed, including technology commonly used in vestibular and concussion management.

The full course consists of two parts:

  • an online course and
  • an in-person clinical lab

The online course is 12 content hours delivered over a 6-week timeframe (35 educational hours). The in-person clinical lab is intended for those clinicians who'd like some additional clinical training after having successfully completed the online portion.  Participants must complete the online portion to participate in the one-day in-person lab, however, the in-person lab portion is optional.

Course Hours & Recognition

The course is equivalent to approximately 12 content hours. 35 educational hours are awarded on the official certificate to reflect varying completion times.

Course Goals for Vestibular/Concussion (Lecture)

  • Students will understand the pathophysiology, assessment and management of various common vestibular pathologies.
  • Students will be familiar with the assessment and treatment maneuvers for different variants of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the recommended assessment and management principles for acute concussion.
  • Students will be able to identify and manage common persistent post-concussion
    symptoms.

 Clinical Lab Registration / Payment

1 day clinical lab $385

Lab withdrawal requests less than one week from the lab date are subject to a $80 administrative fee.

  • Students will be familiar with the assessment and treatment maneuvers for different variants of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
  • Students will comprehend the recommended management principles for acute concussion and post-concussive disorder.

Course facilitator

Kim Dao, PT, DPT is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy with more than fifteen years of clinical practice in acute care, rehabilitation, and outpatient settings.

She taught at the University of Alberta for over eleven years and is currently an Assistant Professor with the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Tufts University. Her teaching focus is on neuroscience, neuromuscular practice management, aging, complex conditions, and prosthetics and orthotics.

The online course content is delivered 100% asynchronously meaning there is no requirement to be online at a specific class date and time. Participants can complete the learning activities in a place and time of their choosing. Content is accessible twenty four (24) hours-a-day from any location with an internet connection.

There are no grades for this course. Instead, students receive a complete or incomplete score based on satisfactory completion of the course. To successfully complete the course students are required to work through all learning activities and achieve 60% on all the knowledge check quizzes at the end of each module. Students are given unlimited quiz attempts and can challenge these at any time throughout the course.

Upon successful completion of each module participants will be issued a faculty digital certificate noting the number of educational hours.
