William Muir Edwards Citizenship Award

Named in honour of our faculty's founding professor, the William Muir Edwards Citizenship Award, recognizes Faculty of Engineering undergraduate students who've made exceptional contributions to society. It's a celebration of citizenship, leadership and of young people who go to extraordinary lengths to make our world a better place.

Students may be nominated by anyone and are selected by a diverse committee made up of faculty, staff, alumni and industry partners. Up to five $10,000 awards are available and successful students will be officially inducted into the William Muir Edwards Society at a special ceremony on June 9, 2020.

Nominations for the 2020 awards are due by March 15, 2020. Details are below.

Nomination Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled full-time in a University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering undergraduate program.

  • Returning to full-time undergraduate studies in both terms of the 2020-2021 academic year (students currently in their final year of study are not eligible).

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

Award Selection Requirements

Nominees will be evaluated in any one, or a combination, of the following areas:

  • Volunteerism in on-campus or off-campus initiatives. This is not limited to engineering and technical pursuits. We want to hear about all the great things our students do and ideally across a broad range of areas.

  • Leadership and involvement in student, civic or community initiatives.

  • Scope and impact of their contributions.

Other points to consider when nominating an individual:

  • The contributions and activities of your nominee must be current. You can provide details about past activities, but you must be able to demonstrate how they are still active in their community.

  • Be sure to highlight the value and impact of the student's contributions.

  • Contributions made as part of a paid position will not be considered.

  • Please only provide the information requested. Additional information submitted (e.g. resumes, CVs, photos, etc.) will not be considered.

How to Nominate

There are three pieces to completing a nomination:

1) Ask your nominee to complete the Nominee Statement Form and return it to you as a Word or PDF file, including their last name in the file name (e.g. Smith_NomineeStatement.pdf). The nominator is responsible for submitting this with the online portion of the nomination.

2) Obtain an additional letter of support from a referee who can further highlight your nominee's contributions. This can be requested by either the nominator or nominee and there are guidelines to assist your referee in preparing a letter. Please include your nominee's last name in the file name (e.g. Smith_Letter.pdf) and attach it to your online nomination form.

3) Complete the Online Nomination Form and submit it with the above-required attachments by the March 15, 2020 deadline (11:59 pm).

If you would like to prepare your nomination before you submit it online, view a PDF of the Nomination Form with required information.
