5.20 Admitting Students Whose Supervisor is Transferring to the University of Alberta

If the University of Alberta has successfully recruited an academic from another institution, and if that faculty member wishes to bring students here who have been studying under his or her supervision at the other university, the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) recognizes this as a special case and will attempt to handle the transition to minimize trouble and expense to the students.

The department, in consultation with the Dean, GPS, will determine which case applies:

Case 1: The student has completed a substantial portion of the program and wishes (and the department and GPS agree) to remain in the home program and convocate from the home university. The student needs to enroll at the University of Alberta only to complete the program requirements (often research only) under the direction of the supervisor.

  • The student should submit an application as a Visiting Student. The department should attach a note identifying the admission as a special case related to the transfer of a faculty member. GPS will admit the applicant as a Visiting Student with certain special features. First, the student may register in Thesis if this is appropriate. This arrangement will be renewed in succeeding years upon written request from the department each year.

Case 2: The student has not completed a substantial portion of the program and wishes (and the department and GPS agree) to transfer to the University of Alberta to complete the program requirements and convocate.

  • The student should apply to be admitted into the desired program by completing the official Application for Graduate Admission form. The department is encouraged to submit a request for transfer credit in the program including requests, if appropriate, relating to courses completed and residence served. The department's request will alert GPS to the fact that this is a special case related to the transfer of a faculty member.

These procedures assume that the student is acceptable to the department as a Visiting Student or a degree candidate.
