Faculty Recognition

Craig Chapman: GSA Graduate Student Supervisor Award (NSERC Research Area). This award recognizes faculty members who excel in the supervision of graduate students.

Michael Kennedy: The Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) Researcher/Practitioner Match Grant. Funded by the Government of Canada, this new initiative connects researchers and sport organizations to build capacity and contribute to the advancement of the Canadian sport and physical activity sector. Dr. Kennedy will be working with MSc student, Sara Szabo on this project. Research Topic: Uptake and impact of the "Keeping Girls in Sport" education program in Canadian youth sport coaches. Student Recognition

Kelsie Acton (PhD student): Rod Murray Memorial Scholarship. The award is given to a doctoral student whose own scholarship and contribution to the academy embodies the qualities that distinctively defined Rod as a scholar and member of the student community. Rod was a passionate teacher, committed to critical thinking, who had a steadfast belief in the role of the public intellectual.

Haley Heffel (BKin): Canada West Most Outstanding Female Wrestler and U SPORTS Gold Medalist. READ MORE

Billy Johnstone (BScKin): Canada West men's volleyball All-Rookie team. READ MORE

Jackson Kennedy (BARST): Canada West men's volleyball first team all-star, READ MORE

Clayton Kirichenko (BKin): Canada West men's hockey first team all-star. READ MORE

Autumn MacDougall (BARST): Canada West women's hockey first team all-star. READ MORE

Royden Radowits (BScKin): U SPORTS Gold Medalist, men’s track and field. READ MORE

Rachel Skow (PhD student): The Physiological Society Travel Grant. The travel grants help physiologists attend conferences and workshops and provide invaluable opportunities for networking. This grant was specifically obtained to help offset the costs of performing field research in Nepal.

Sara Szabo (MSc student): The Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) Researcher/Practitioner Match Grant. Staff Recognition

For the third time in his career, Scott Edwards has been named the Canada West Coach of the Year. The longtime Alberta Pandas coach led his team to a 16-4 record, stretching his all-time CW regular season record to 220-74 (.748). Over his tenure with Alberta, Edwards has never posted a losing record and reached the 15-win plateau a total of 10 times. READ MORE

Golden Bears Basketball head coach Barnaby Craddock has earned Canada West Coach of the Year honours for the third time in his career. For the second time in three seasons, the Alberta Golden Bears posted a 19-1 record to top the conference standings. READ MORE

 

Athletics Recognition

Canada West All-Stars:

  • Pandas Basketball: Alberta Panda Vanessa Wild earned her first career all-star nod, as she was named to the Canada West First All-Star team. READ MORE
  • Golden Bears Basketball: The Golden Bears were represented by a pair of conference all-stars, as Ivan Ikomey was named a First Team All-Star, and Tyus Jefferson was named a conference Third Team All-Star. READ MORE
  • Pandas Hockey: Alberta saw defender Cayle Dillon, along with forwards Autumn MacDougall and Kennedy Ganser earn places on the First All-Star team. Pandas goalie Kirsten Chamberlin earned her Second Team All-Star status, while first-year Panda Madison Willan was named to the conference's All-Rookie team.
  • Golden Bears Basketball: Grayson Pawlenchuk and Clayton Kirichenko earned First Team status, while Cole Sanford was named to the Second Team. Noah Philp and Dawson Davidson were both named to the All-Rookie team. READ MORE
  • Pandas Volleyball: Fourth-year Panda Kory White earned her third-consecutive First Team All-Star honour, while third-year Julia Zonneveld was named to the Canada West Second All-Star team. READ MORE
  • Golden Bears Volleyball: Golden Bears Max Elgert and Jackson Kennedy were named First Team All-Stars, while first-year Bears middle Billy Johnstone was named to the All-Rookie team. READ MORE

Golden Bears Swimming captured two gold medals at the U SPORTS Swimming Championship- Cale Kooyman in the 50m breaststroke, and Kier Przyswitt in the 50m butterfly. READ MORE

Golden Bears and Pandas Track and Field combined to win 19 medals at the Canada West Championship. Pandas finished third, Bears fifth. READ MORE

Golden Bears and Pandas Wrestling pick up six medals at the 2020 Wrestling U SPORTS Championships, including a gold medal by Haley Heffel (72kg). Pandas finished third, Bears fourth. READ MORE
